A recent news report from CNN Newsroom "anchor Don Lemon stated at the outset of a story focusing largely on border-town drug-related violence that people in the United States might want "to think twice before considering Mexico for a spring break vacation."
Basically, that report implied all of Mexico is involved in such violence and it’s simply not true! Cabo San Lucas and East Cape are far from the drug war front. These areas in Baja California Sur, like many areas on Mexico's mainland, have not been sucked into the drug-related violence and do not deserve to be tossed into the battle. The CNN piece also highlighted that the serious problems fester in border towns such as Tijuana and Rosarito Beach.
Don’t let the news flash discourage you from vacationing in Mexico for spring break. Instead, pack up and head to the East Cape Fishing Resort. March and April are the best months where Mexico Sportfishing is most enjoyable. During these two months, the weather is perfect with warm water and the arrival of spring definitely brings in new fishing opportunities for the Mexico fishing vacation goers.
In a recent fishing report from Reeldanger Sportfishing, boats are averaging two strikes on marlin per day. Yellowtail have ranged from 20 pounds all the way to 50 pounds in what is some very good fishing. Baja California sportfishing is always best during this time of year. Mexico sportfishing has always been its best in the East Cape region. Here are the latest conditions for the world famous Sea of Cortez. This area is known worldwide as one of the premier vacation and big-game fishing spots in the world. It consistently produces huge numbers of blue, black, and striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and more.
--Cabo San Lucas Sportfishing: Maybe La Niña is to blame, but conditions are unsettled for this time of year, with strong winds raging at times on the Pacific side of the Baja peninsula. Marlin are the primary targets and action is fair to good. Lots of bonito. Some dorado.
--San Jose del Cabo: The Gordo Banks Pangas fleet is well-positioned for marlin but is having trouble obtaining the right kind of bait and is settling for mullet, which marlin can take or leave. Some dorado. Lots of small roosterfish and only scattered pargo along the coast. Native fisherman Chame Pino won the La Playita Dorado Tournament with a 45.5-pound bull, caught at San Luis Bank.
--East Cape Fishing: Much more settled. Lots of big dorado. Timothy Boyle of Tustin landed a 48-pounder while fishing at Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. Rancho Leonero reports vessels are averaging one-plus billfish per day. Chris Nelson and Ron Johnson from Carlsbad, in two days on a cruiser, caught two striped marlin, six dorado and 10 white bonito!
--La Paz: Intermittent strong winds made for a hit-or-miss week, but large dorado and very large roosterfish were caught, and some marlin and sailfish baited. Seattle's Andy Ewing, on his first-ever fishing trip, caught and released an estimated 50-pound roosterfish aboard a Tailhunter International.
